Why were you inspired to write children's books?
After my sister decided I should be a writer I wanted to be a journalist like my grandfather and aunt but then I realised I would have to stick to the facts. When I got older I did a creative writing course. I liked doing the children's writing assignment best. Later, in Dubai, I worked for a children's magazine, 'Young Times' writing feature articles, stories and an advice column called Ask Aunt Alice. This work gave me the experience to write books.

How would you describe yourself?
Adventurous Intuitive Persistent I like the adventurous side of me because it makes me get up and have exciting experiences such as leaving home at 19 and travelling around Australia; getting my pilot's licence; living in other countries; trekking the Kokoda; and even sitting down and writing a book. I rely on my intuitive side because it's part of the creative process. It's exciting when I get a flutter of recognition when a situation, character or sentence appears in my mind and I know it's going to be a story. That brings me to my persistence. I guess I like to finish what I start so persistence is good for a writer because it means I keep going until The End. |
